What is an average?

An average is a measure of central tendency that represents the typical or common value in a set of data. There are different types of averages, including the mean, median, and mode.

Mean

The mean is the sum of all values in a data set divided by the number of values in the set. It is the most commonly used measure of average.

Median

The median is the middle value in a data set when the values are arranged in numerical order. If there is an even number of values, the median is the average of the two middle values.

Mode

The mode is the value that appears most frequently in a data set. Each of these measures of central tendency can give different results depending on the data set and the context in which it is used. Therefore, it is important to choose the appropriate measure of average based on the characteristics of the data and the purpose of the analysis.

In the context of mathematics, “average” usually refers to the mean, therefore, the arithmetic mean. It is a relatively simple statistical concept that is widely used in many areas.

Mean formula

The mean of a data set is the sum of all the data divided by the count n.

How to find the mean?

The equation below is one of the more commonly understood definitions of the average, where the sum is the result of adding all of the given numbers, and the count is the number of values being added. For example, given the 5 numbers, 20, 35, 40, 500, and 1000, the average can be calculated as such:

Mean:
Sum

20, 35, 40, 500, 1000
